Not really economically coherent. If Gree was going to liquidate his holdings, to devote his resources to a time machine, then he could have got more money for an active firm than for idled plant.

I thought the twist was going to be that by closing all his operations and ruining all those lives, he'd prevented that perfect future he was aiming for from happening. He'd get there and be thrown in prison by angry folks who revile him, and live his long remaining years in a hellhole.
This works too, though.
