The Dark Knight Rises and The Man of Steel.

So.  Yeah.  This is Anne Hathaway, as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises.

And this is Henry Cavill in full costume for The Man of Steel.

Got to say that The Dark Knight Rises isn't filling me with the same sense of giddy geek-love that the approach of the last film did, but that could be because of the inclusion of Bane as the bad guy.  I have always thought of Bane as likely one of the worst of Batman's rogues gallery, probably because whenever I think of him I always think of the awful kak-fest that was Knightfall.  Would've much rather have had The Penguin in there, meself. And lovely though the delightful Miss Hathaway may indeed look on her what-would-appear-to-be stolen Batpod, she does look yawningly generic, and not in the least bit like the Catwoman I was hoping for.  But! that said, I'm guessing that this isn't Selina in the full, final Catwoman get-up.

And I'm certainly not gonna give Henry Cavill a hard time.  I don't know him, I've no idea if he's any good or not, and he looks ok.  But the costume's dark.  And that's what bothers me.  My mate Bub - he runs me local comic shop - once said to me that you could always tell if a Fantastic Four comic was going to be worth reading just by looking at the colour of The Thing ( if he's brown, you can be almost guaranteed it's going to be shit ).  And that's how this feels.  I'm not going to shoot the film out of the sky before it's even got off, but I am going to say that the reason why DC can't seem to get a decent Superman film together is because of their obssession with darkening/grittying up the character. Dark works great for Batman.  Superman is not Batman.

Have a great Saturday, all.

Excellent post, Joe. Bruce Timm seemed to have the right idea on the basic differences in style for Superman and Batman, why can't Christopher Nolan? RISES, to me, just does not look or sound appealing at all. I'll see it, but... Sadly, Nolan doesn't care for the more "fantastic" elements (movie-wise); by all rights the villains of the new movie shoulda been Dr. Hugo Strange and Man-Bat. Ah well...

Man-Bat? oh, hell, yes.

Catwoman is supposed to be SHINY! she looks more like Black Widow here. And tho i have huge trepidations about a British guy playing Supe (no offense Joe!) its a Zak Snyder film and so i will watch it regardless.

In my opinion they should have got a new actor to play the Joker for this film. Heath Ledger did a great job, but there are other talented actors out there who could play it. I don't think it would be an insult to his memory. And if another actor put a different spin on it, that would be in keeping with the Joker's fragmented mind. One issue he's a thieving prankster, next he's a murderous psycho. Bane just isn't iconic enough. Not many people who don't read comics will have heard of him, but everyone knows who the Joker is.
Still, I hope it's a good film.

no offence taken, Art, matey. I didn't even know he was British. I've purposely avoided anything to do with him since he was announced as the new Big Guy.

and I reckon you're right there, Steve. apparently, the third film was supposed to be the Joker's film, anyway, but Ledger dying put the mockers on that. if it had been me, I'd've got Johnny Depp ( not his biggest fan, but it's a role he could easily take on ), put him in the same make-up & costume as Ledger, and then just let him do his own thing. I think the general non-comics public would have been more than happy with that, and, as you so rightly point out, that would fit perfectly in with the modern comics take on the Joker: the whole Grant Morrison super-sanity thing.

that said, as Art sez, it's a Zak Snyder film, so I'll definately see it, and, like yourself, I'm holding out that it's gonna be a good one. we'll see. I still would've rather had seen Christopher Nolan's take on the Penguin, though.

& as far as the Superman film goes, right now I'm just not feeling it. I mean, really? Zod? what's wrong with the Parasite? Toy Man? Prankster? Brainiac? Bizarro? Mxyzptlk? Darkseid? yeesh. still, I'm not running it before it's even out. you never know: it may well turn out to be brilliant.

I'm with you Joe. That Catwoman costume looks too bland for our favorite feline-themed thief. The Superman picture looks all right. I'll see these and hope they do the characters credit. Superman needs a good movie.
