Up until now, I've remained cooly indifferent to the whole rebooting everything at DC thing. Honestly, I am beyond giving a toss. I'll give a couple of the # 1's a shot, but, I'm not holding out much in the way of hope. Ok. So, yeah. There's this.
This is the cover to Suicide Squad # 1, it's by Ryan Benjamin. It's not a bad cover, I guess, if you like that sort of thing. I know nothing about the Suicide Squad, I never read the previous series', and, as I've said, I won't be picking this one up. But, that's by the by.
See that chick on the cover there? front and centre? That's Harley Quinn.

I see that I'm not the only bloke who pretty much decided the same thing about the whole newfangled DCnU.
By my count there may be four books worth looking at and that just ain't enough to keep me swimming back after they've tossed me out on my arse. Let's see how effective they are at locating these elusive "new" readers they keep fantasizing about.
Blehh!!
I agree with you about the whole DC reboot thing, and it is highlighted by the cover you show. I don't know why when someone new takes over a book they feel the need to redesign the character.
I am barely hanging on to Marvel, especially after all the havok they have done to their characters over the last few years (Destroying Asgard, killing Cap, etc.).
That's why I appreciate the classics you post in your blog here.

"I don't know why when someone new takes over a book they feel the need to redesign the character."
I can tell you why...it's because they have no talent (today). To create NEW stories for a previously defined or imaged character is hard to do. The height of talent is to work within that restraint and STILL come up with great original plots that are still faithful to that character's history.
These new "I've-got-attitude-but-no-talent" writers and artists don't seem to realize that they did not create these characters. They are temporary CUSTODIANS of them.
I forget the year I stopped buying comics, but it was when Marvel's "Secret Wars" came out. Since then, I'd occasionally pick up a Comics Journal, and in recent years check out the blogs. Every 2 years it seemed someone was complaining about a "reboot"(again). Now it seems like the publishers are doing it every 6 months. (almost as often as those asinine-sounding "BIG EVENT" (further proof that they don't have the talent to write "small" events).
Not reading comics but reading commentary on them for the past few decades must give me a weird perspective. When I read this blog entry I had to triple-check the date of it. Was it REALLY written in July '11?, because I could have SWORN it was written 1 year ago or 3 years ago or 5 years ago.
Sorry for the rant...but I used to truly love comics.
When DC does a decent Captain Marvel, my advice is to dig a bomb shelter, stock it with food and water, and acquire firearms, because the End of Days will be upon us.
the girl in that picture may or may not be many things but she is defnitely NOT Harley Quinn! i think its time to bring out the comic book firing squad!
