Spooky!

When in doubt, wack up a load of old covers.  And if you're gonna wack up a load of old covers, you could do a whole lot worse than this lot: a fantastic collection of DC's finest horror titles, drawn by the best in the business: Berni Wrightson, George Evans, Mike Kaluta, Neal Adams, Nick Cardy, and Tony Dezuniga.

Fantastic -- I saved many of my originals from the 70's. Still have 'em now, packed away in the cupboard.

The DC reprints are good at the price, but a qaulity bound rerun in colour is what is needed.

Joe, how come you don't have any Jerry Grandinetti on your pages? I'd have thought he'd be your taste. He's wonderful, deep, and very Gnostic.

Those were sweet, Joe! I'd love to read more Weird War Tales. And I'd like to second that request for more Jerry Grandenetti; I can't remember whether it was GRANTBRIDGE or DIVERSIONS that turned me onto his Warren stuff, but he easily became one of my favorite artists because of it. I've always been curious about Mlle. Marie!

I had almost everyone of those comics and remember them so fondly. Bernie Wrightson, Ghad, was he the best horror illustrator, or what? And Alex Nino, and Mike Kaluta.....

Heh heh heh....clearly you are representing a lot of our interests with your fantastic pages Joe -- the only place on the net that presents and researches these great artists as they should be.

One of the comics companies should be paying you to present your own compilations -- it would likely be much better than most on the market!

PS Just found a review of Grandinetti's work in the new DC re-issue -- that bloke Red Eyes, sums up the vibe of the DC comics quite well.

Speaking of Grandinetti some more, it shows what an unjust world the art world/comics world is -- some research turns up the fact that he heavily influenced Pop artist , Roy Lichenstein : "Most of his best-known artworks are relatively close, but not exact, copies of comic book panels, a subject he largely abandoned in 1965. (He would occassionally incorporate comics into his work in different ways in later decades.) These panels were originally drawn by lesser known comic book artists such as Russ Heath, Tony Abruzzo, Irv Novick, and Jerry Grandinetti, who rarely received any credit."

Imagine how well pissed off Grandinetti must have felt : he was the real originator, the real talent -- but he probably spent most of his life on a middle range salary, un noticed except by a small number -- and Lichenstein rips him off -- and he is the one to be remembered in the museums,Universities, art galleries, and history books for ever.

yeah, I'd read that Lichtenstein thing before, Gnostic'. I like Lichtenstein, on the whole, but I always found it unfair that he would never openly acknowledge the sources he used.

to be fair, I was never the greatest fan of Jerry Grandenetti, meself ( so, yeah, John, it was probably Groove over at the Diversions ), but, hey, if you want some Grandenetti then Grandenetti you shall receive. gimme a wee while and I'll pop some up!

and, yeah, I am TOTALLY up for someone paying me to spend my days trawling through their archives for them!

Nick Cardy is one of those artists whose covers I always loved, but rarely liked when he was illustrating comics. I think the only series I liked his work on was "Batlash." (I think that was Cardy...)

Joe, judging from the superlative content of your Blog, I am certain you'd do a great job on a compilation text. You should email some publishers with a proposal deal, and see how they respond. Nothing to lose by trying mate. I have been reading comics for nearly forty years, and I have learnt a lot more from your pages than most other sources put together.

Steve: really? I LOVED/still love Nick Cardy. his work on BatLash was fantastic, but his work on The Teen Titans was absolutely cracking. still, horses for coarses, 'ey?

Daniel: very cool.
