The Mighty Joe's Influence Map.

I see Alfred Bester on your chart. He was a huge influence on me during my college days. I even began the notion of doing a major thesis on his works for my grad work and had just begun investigating going to interview him when he passed away. I haven't read his stuff in years, but it still tingles in my noggin.

next to Moorcock, Bester's my favourite science fiction/fantasy author. I re-read The Demolished Man only a week or so ago, and it still gives me the same thrills that it did when I first read it way back in my teens. I wanted to include J. G. Ballard somewhere in the map, too, but I ran out of space.

At least three there I consider big personal influences that I didn't get to include in my own for one reason or another.

But what would Tony Benn think about you beating up tramps?

I share your interests in Scott Walker,Ronnie Lane, and Terry Gilliam.Oscar Wilde and beer are good too.I actually bought a Scott Walker CD from a yard sale years ago.I fell in love with his music and have tried to find more, but the local record shop never heard of him. That was the best quarter I ever spent.I loved Ronnie Lane's music when he was with the Small Faces and Faces. And Gilliam's animation was just astonishing.Cheers Liam

Count me as another Bester enthusiast. Now I feel bad Rip never had the chance to interview him!

In general, this is the map of someone with impeccable taste. No surprise there!

...don't know about Oscar Wilde and Tony Benn - I'd've thought KIM Wilde and MR. Benn were more your measure!

p.s.

One of the reasons I was always off sick from school during the '70s was just so I could watch Mr. Benn - god, I loved that show.

I didn't consciously know about such things, then, but clearly the guy in the fez was a sufi or some kind of descended master...either that or a dead bad major acid or opium supplier...and yet there was him and Mr. Benn dropping their brains out in the middle of Watch With Mother(f*cker) on the BBC!

...last I heard Kim Wilde was letting people pay to watch her giving her hollyhocks a good going over!

Mark, them tramps were oppressing me. rise like lions out of slumber, and all that.

Liam, I can't recommend grabbing yourself a healthy load of Scott Walker highly enough. you oughtta be able to pick up stacks through Amazon or Play.com or any number of online retailers. trust me, it'll be money well spent. failing that, you could always go and download individual tracks through places like BeeMp3.com, or whole albums through the many file-sharing sites out there, but, of course, I would never condone such behaiviour. Ronnie Lane is God-like in his awesomeness, and Terry Gilliam is responsible for at least two, possibly three, of my all-time favourite films.

Richard, I don't feel bad for Rip. in fact, I rather envy him. imagine being able to read Tiger!Tiger! for the very first time all over again! & thanks!

borky, I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about ( ahem! ). talking mind-altering drugs, indeed! why, the very thought! & I'll have you know I used to fancy the pants off Kim Wilde back in my younger days. but not Mr. Benn. he was a bit plain-looking for my tastes. that, and he was a Mr.
