Rockwell's greatest masterpiece, a work which by itself qualifies him as a great artist regardless of whatever else he did or did not do, is Southern Justice.

So is there a British logical equivalent to Norman Rockwell? I've always wondered about that.

I'm not really sure, Nathaniel.

In terms of style, probably the closest I can think of would be Morgan Penn.

But if we're talking about an artist being as closely associated with a national identity as Rockwell is with the American psyche, then, I think, probably Joseph Mallord William Turner. The styles between Turner and Rockwell are as different as can be, but their importance to their respective nation's idea of themselves are as equally set in stone. If not Turner, then certainly Thomas Gainsborough, for the same reasons.
