In terms of style, probably the closest I can think of would be Morgan Penn.

But if we're talking about an artist being as closely associated with a national identity as Rockwell is with the American psyche, then, I think, probably Joseph Mallord William Turner. The styles between Turner and Rockwell are as different as can be, but their importance to their respective nation's idea of themselves are as equally set in stone. If not Turner, then certainly Thomas Gainsborough, for the same reasons.; 12 December 2010 14:24
