This was, believe it or not, the first POPEYE comic strip--such as it is--that I ever saw! I knew the characters from the TV cartoons only (not even the originals!) but I was buying the MAD paperbacks that reprinted all the Kurtzman originals! The actual newspaper strip had long since left the local papers by the time I was a kid and if there were comic books during that period, I had never seen them. So, to me, Will Elder's POOPEYE IS Popeye!
Terrific stuff. I've got 2 or 3 reprints of most of the first 23 issues of MAD - must dig 'em out and read 'em.
believe it or not, Steve, mate, but I'm in the same boat. we never had Popeye in the papers over here when I was a kid, and I don't remember ever seeing the cartoons. but, like yourself, I was always pawing over the old Mad paperbacks - you could find them just about anywhere back then - and that was where I got my first Popeye fix. man, was I disappointed when I finally got around to reading the Segar atrip!!!
