Looking at this lovely artwork now, I can't exactly recall why but I've long felt this is the BATMAN story where Neal "jumped the shark."

I know exactly what you mean, Steve, and, yeah, I agree with you. I don't think anything by Neal Adams ever got quite as good as this, again. but, hey, let's face it, even not-as-good-as-this Neal Adams beats pretty much anyone working in comics today.

am I an old bastard or am I just stating the bleeding obvious?

I have often referred to the third through sixth panels of the third page of this story in explaining why the movie Batman Returns was a flaming piece of cr_p by someone (Tim Burton) who in fact had to actively hate the Batman to write and film a scene in which he would waddle over to the side of a building to watch a woman fall to her death.
